Sulton Rogers with carvings

Sulton Rogers was born near Oxford, Mississippi in 1922, and learned carpentry skills at an early age with the help of his father. He started carving small animals as a child. He traveled a lot and then settled in Syracuse, New York, where he worked for Allied Chemical. He took up carving again when he needed to have something to keep him awake during night shifts at the chemical plant. He retired in 1984, and moved back to the Oxford area. Rogers fashions snakes, vampires, "haints", bodies in coffins, twisted-looking faces, and some religious matter.
